Sometimes we have already embarked upon a journey before we realise that this is not the route we want to be on. And you know what they say, better late than never. The woman I am introducing today had a sort of a similar start. But eventually, she has found her niche and I am incredibly proud to present her and her story.
Poonam’s journey started 11 years ago in a classroom with all things finance on her first day at a Commerce College. Very quickly she realized that this was not the route for her and ended up getting admission into a very reputed design college: NIFT Gandhinagar. She specialized in accessory design, but due to the holistic approach at the college she was able to learn design processes which she could apply in different areas.
Her background in design led her to starting Silkwrap: a brand that sold shoes, clutches and accessories. After attending numerous exhibitions and supplying to numerous stores, she wanted to challenge herself more and thus decided to venture into an entire clothing range under her namesake label: Poonam Mittal.
During a chat with Poonam, she says “It is very important for every designer to have the zest to create, have correct knowledge & techniques and be aware of the market trends.” While discussing what inspires her, she says that her surroundings and the happy people around her inspire her. This happiness has found its way into her most recent collection.
Her most recent work is titled “Colors of Life”. It is a collection inspired by the happy people around her since happiness is contagious. The collection is dominantly white with pops of colour through florals, heart prints and stripes. With the incoming summer, the whites and brights will fit right into your season-wardrobe. This collection will be available to shop at the Black Taxi Exhibit happening this March 1 & 2 at Courtyard by Marriott Ahmedabad. You can meet Poonam at Stall no. 8!
When asked to pick 3 of her favorites from the current collection, she says, “This would be a tough one, but if I were a buyer, I’d go with a top, a midi dress and an Indian kurti. This will add three different styles to my wardrobe.”
Poonam loves to sketch and hand draws each piece before it come to reality. She enjoys the process of creating something new everyday, experimenting and letting her imagination flow. “Colours of Life” was designed keeping in mind the needs of the hour and the preferences of distinct age-groups. From Anarkalis adorned with pure Marodi embroidery to tops and jackets with peplum and puff sleeves, Poonam has designed an all-encompassing collection ensuring that you’ll find something for every occasion and event.
When asked about her views on where the Indian fashion industry is moving, she says, “Due to the popularity of social media, cultures are merging. We are more aware about trends around the world and our fashion is moving forward with it.”
Poonam believes that fashion is a cycle and due to that we start valuing things from the past more. Trends like puffy sleeves, organza and midi dresses are an excellent example of trends from the past coming back.
