The His (Shoe) Story

I shudder to imagine a time before the invention of shoes. Yet what started as a practical venture has grown into a varied, booming industry just as concerned with art as it is with functionality. Though all shoes share basic characteristics, their coloring, materials, and designs have transformed drastically over thousands of years in the fascinating history of footwear.

Up until 1850, shoes were made straight, meaning that there was no differentiation from left and right shoes. As the twentieth century approached, shoemakers improved comfort by making foot-specific shoes.

These days, there are shoes specific to every occasion, mood, and preference. There has also been a movement away from styles that focus primarily on comfort and function, as many designers are shifting interest from a matter of practicality to that of aesthetics. Celebrities like Lady Gaga have introduced the world to footwear that’s more art and armadillo than it is clothing.

Hence the thought of a Noah’s Shoe Arc came to mind, simply out of fear that if I did have to be on board Noah’s Arc on the day of Armageddon, which 5 pairs of shoes will I carry with me and yet get the best combination out of comfort (simply necessary), style (without which I’d rather stay for doomsday) and relevance, or what I call balance of attire.

Everyone has a few go-to to pairs in their collection of shoes. The ones that never make it back into their boxes. You sport them on many different occasions because of their versatility. Here are mine!!

The Eternal Oxford:

There’s a reason this type of shoe has been around for centuries. The Oxford style originated in Europe but became popular in the US in the 1800’s. Walking down the street, you’ll see at least a few gents sporting this classic style. Oxfords are true to their versatile nature and are one of the best shoes for men. Dress them up or down, this style is truly ETERNAL!!

The Wingtip:

Why do wingtips deserve a spot in your wardrobe? You can make them appropriate for pretty much any occasion. Pair these guys with chinos and a button down shirt, and you’ve got a look that can go from the office to happy hour. Got a wedding this weekend? Grab a pair of wingtips and head on out. Not every shoe is flexible. The decorative perforations on the tops of these shoes help them stand out from your everyday kicks and make the wingtip one of the best shoes for men.

There’s no other shoe that screams “summer” as well as this one. If you categorize yourself as suave, loafers should have a place in your closet. They go great with the ankle-baring pants you wear, and they don’t look half-bad with a nice pair of shorts either. I prefer tasseled Belgian Loafers so much I could go to bed with them on.

The Stylish Sneaker:

The high-end sneaker is a new addition to the shoe staples every man should own. The sneaker is one of the most versatile pieces in a man’s wardrobe. Depending on your style, you can rock on many occasions. A pair of leather, suede, or canvas shoes will pair well with chinos and a chambray shirt, or a summer suit. What I call a balance to attire can be achieved perfectly by pairing a summer suit and funky sneakers.

The Monk Strap:

Like a good whiskey, the Monk Strap can be a “Single” or a “Double”. This style grew in popularity thanks to the menswear influencers rocking them on their insta-feeds. This style of shoe shows that this guy keeps up with trends in men’s fashion. A guy that wears leather monk-straps wants his shoes noticed.

Remember a man’s shoes say a lot about the man himself. Until the next time we “SHOOTALK” – CIAO CIAO.
