Stuck between the devil and the deep sea…
How often do you hear yourself say this ? Well me , many times. Now Ive made a conscious decision to write down a pro and con list and nine out of ten times I’m able to come up with a sensible choice. Im not saying that I do not go wrong , I do , but they are my choices and I hold only myself responsible. Once you have the wisdom to do know what to do , its also important to have courage to follow through… so tough sometimes.
At any given moment of the day, you have the complete liberty to do whatever it is that YOU want.
Now listen to this. YOU DO.
More often than not, we come across people saying things like, “I am stuck”, “I don’t think I have a choice”, “I have no way out”. It is with words like these that most individuals give away their power over their lives. Whatever we choose to believe about ourselves and our situations shapes our experiences. As Louise Hay said, “The thoughts we think and the words we speak create our experiences.”
Now, it is not always possible to remain positive in the face of everything that life throws at us but in order to move forward, we must let go of the feeling of helplessness and look for that silver lining.
We must take notice of all the things we have control over and begin taking responsibility for our situations. From the moment we wake up, we are faced with so many options about our day , somedays are crystal clear whereas some are not. the important thing is to keep our life condition in top shape. We fail to acknowledge the power that rests within us and even though our life seems mundane, we end up doing nothing about it. Mark Manson calls this, ‘The Victim Mentality’.
More often than not, we end up blaming external circumstances and sometimes, even other people for our problems. This may give us a sense of fulfilment for a short period but eventually it leads to accumulated anger and despair. Because we don’t take responsibility for our situation, we also fail to take responsibility to do something about it. All our situations are created by our thoughts, once we bring a shift in the way we think, we bring about a change in the way we act. And here’s where the key to getting back the reins of your life lies.
You don’t like what you’re doing for a job right now? You can either continue doing it and complaining about it or you can take a risk and quit. Sure, you’ll struggle but you’ll eventually float above if you think you can. If you never do anything about the job that’s making you unhappy, you’ll never find that happiness that you’re wishing for.
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s okay to be unhappy about situations, its just not okay to not do anything about it. At any given moment in your life, you can make a choice to step out of it only if you look hard enough for the alternative. And this alternative may not always be a bed of roses. If it was, everyone would be on that other side. It’s a struggle but that struggle is what will define your success.
And these choices will never be easy. Because for you to choose something, you have to let go of the alternative. In the case of your job, you’re letting go of your security and stable income; which may be hard. But it is through overcoming these tough decisions that one finds happiness. That’s where your personal satisfaction lies.
And let’s face it, these choices will never stop, at every point of every day, you make choices. Some seem easier than the rest and some are so difficult to choose that we deny they even exist. At some point, you have to come to terms with them and make a decision that will bring you one step closer to the life that you desire. Be brave and make that choice even if you feel the world is closing in on you –revel in the chance to create the life you want to live.
We all need to keep a continuous check on ourselves, invest in ourselves to avoid getting stuck. Our growth has to be multi dimensional by which I mean socially, professionally and also at home. If there is even one area in which you feel weak, you need to take a stock check and work upon it, maybe take a few hard but effective choices.
Choices are hard but are the hinges of our destiny – Edward Markham
